Lately, the government has come out with new guidelines, listed in Document F, which mention standards for ventilation in all English homes going forward. In order to improve ventilation, all windows will need to have trickle vents except where there is already mechanical ventilation, like fans. Trickle vents are also rated, based on ventilation rates, for different rooms in your home. For example, kitchens and bathrooms need more ventilation.
